Overview
CI programs include the International Visitor Leadership Program, the Open World Leadership Center, Community Connections and Council of International Programs USA four-month J-1 trainee program. Colleagues International programs range from a few days to four months. CI has the capability to coordinate site visits, internships and professional appointments; as well as home stays and home hospitality.

Community Connections
The Community Connections Program, funded through the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia at USAID, is designed to promote public diplomacy through the exchange of cultural ideas and values between participants, U.S. families and local community host organizations.

The Community Connections Program offers home-stay based practical training opportunities in the U.S. for entrepreneurs, local government officials, legal professionals, non-governmental organization leaders and other professionals from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Local community host organizations - including Colleagues International - arrange internships for participants based on interests and experience.

The goals of the Community Connections program are to

> provide participants with professional training and exposure to day-to-day
functioning of a free market system

> encourage public-private partnerships in Europe/Eurasia by including private sector and government participants on U.S. visits

> create links between U.S. and Europe/Eurasia regions and communities

International Visitor Leadership Program
The International Visitor Leadership Program brings participants to the United States from all over the world each year to meet and confer with their professional counterparts and to experience the U.S. firsthand. The visitors, who are current or potential leaders in government, politics, the media, education, and other fields, are selected by American Officials overseas. More than 200 current and former Heads of State, 1,500 cabinet-level ministers, and many other distinguished world leaders in government and the private sector have participated in the International Visitor Leadership Program.

The Department of State directs the program in cooperation with a wide range of non-profit organizations - including Colleagues International - operating under cooperative agreements with the Department of State. The program also relies on the commitment and skills of over 95 community-based organizations (CIVs) across the country. They represent a wide range of institutions and expertise from universities to World Affairs Councils to all-volunteer.

These organizations are known collectively as "Councils for International Visitors (CIVs)" associated under the umbrella organization of the National Council for International Visitors located in Washington, D.C.

Open World
The Open World Program enables emerging Russian leaders to experience U.S. democracy and free enterprise in action in communities across the United States including Colleagues International. During 10-day trips, Open World participants learn about the roles and inter-relationships of the three different branches and levels of the U.S. government. They also examine how the U.S. private and nonprofit sectors help meet social and civic needs.

The program builds mutual understanding between the United States and Russia by opening and maintaining new avenues of dialogue between U.S. political and civic leaders and a new generation of Russian leaders. The program’s civic delegations focus on one of eight themes: economic development, education reform, environment, federalism, health, rule of law, women as leaders, or youth issues.

Council of International Programs USA
Colleagues International is a CIPUSA Global Partner. Visitors hosted in Kalamazoo experience a four-month internship, four or more home hosts and a rich cultural program. CIPUSA Global Partners Program introduces international professionals to U.S. organizations and companies through pre-arranged practical training programs. This program was established to assist American companies and organizations in bringing international professionals to the U.S. for training and to assist individuals who have secured a training placement with U.S. based organizations. This program can take place anywhere in the U.S.
